Quick Wins
What are some of the quick wins for Auckland transport, that could be done in two years or less on a modest budget?

Real-Time information (displays and on the internet) should indicate time is real or scheduled
The information that is currently displayed on the Real-Time displays is a combination of Real (GPS) time, estimated & scheduled times. That means that if the driver forgets to "register" his GPS, the times displayed will be either scheduled or "DLY". For people who use this information to decide which bus stop to walk to, the information provided by the Real-Time display is often misleading. For people at the bus stop notice "ghost buses", which are counting down to arrive, and disappear off the board completely without the bus arriving at all. Simply indicate next to the time, whether the… more

Half hourly weekend frequencies on Western Rail Line
Western Line trains currently run hourly on weekends. Is this good enough?

Make bus drivers always stop as far front of the bus stop as it's possible.
This is particularly needed on busy bus stops, such as Symonds St, Albert St, Fanshawe St and bus stations, where some drivers always stop in the middle, blocking the buses behind, so that these people can't get off until the blocking bus has moved. It's a definitely quick-win and would help speed up the flow.

Make certain stops into "timed stops" - where bus doesn't leave until the time has passed.
This would mean more certainty for people transferring between services. It's easy to accept that bus is late, but for them to be early, means loosing patronage. The timed stops would be advertised clearly in the timetable like the one here: http://goo.gl/fLCV0 - see the clock icon, which stands for "scheduled leave time".

Bus Service From Onehunga to the Airport
Bus service from Airport to Onehunga to support the reopened branch line and to help build patronage for the eventual extension of the railway line to the airport. This could also provide the impetus to move to half hour off peak Onehunga rail services, and passenger expectations of a train every half hour at all times will help build patronage.

Remove parked buses on Customs St around Britomart during peak hours - and turn into a bus lane
The "Go West", "Waka Pacific" and tourist buses block both sides of this busy stretch, slowing down all traffic (incl. buses) arriving to Britomart precinct. That slows down all buses coming from Anzac St, Northern Express, Birkenhead Buses. Why not find a parking on the side streets for them instead allowing them park on the arterial road?

Allow riding of "City Zone (50c)" buses on the Northern Pass.
You can already ride the train to Glen Innes, Ellerslie & Kingsland, but you cannot transfer buses once you arrive to city. This would allow students more choices of getting to the University, and people working around K Rd area. The 881 and 891x buses are too unreliable. This feature is already a part of monthly train & ferry passes, so why not with the first "integrated" ticket in Auckland - the "Northern Pass"?

A pedestrian bridge between Middlemore and Papatoetoe Stations
Currently there is no way for pedestrians to cross the rail line between Middlemore and Papatoetoe stations. A pedestrian link between the two would enable walking and cycling opportunities between the two sides of the tracks and enable people to use bus services on the opposite sides.

Eliminate minimum parking requirements.
Give developers the flexibility to chose an appropriate amount of parking for a site, rather than forcing them to build heaps

Extend the pm peak
Why do evening peak bus services pretty much finish at 6:00pm? For anyone working late or with stuff to do after work, the lack of service is really annoying. It puts a lot of people off using the buses, as getting home can be so difficult.

Region-wide Timetable Review
Identify key bus services that consistently run late (such as 50, 471 and 881) and look at restructuring the timetable to make services more reliable. Also look at services that run too early, and trim times down there too.

Traffic lights for the left hand hand turn from Union into Nelson St
The morning 028 bus service can be held up for 10 minutes or more at the traffic lights on the corner of Union and Nelson in the morning. Left hand turning traffic has to give way to pedestrians, and frequently only one or two vehicles make it through

10-15 minute frequencies on Dominion Rd sunday services
We need to have better frequencies on Sundays and Dom Rd where it's always popular when I've ridden a bus on a sunday is a good start

Name badges on bus drivers - where you can see 'em
Often you see the same bus driver again and again but you might not ever get to know their names. Drivers don't always wear badges and often when they do its on the right hand side, where you can't see it. It might make bus drivers more customer service orientated if you know their names.

Mandatory cycle racks on buses (at least a proportion of buses): increase flexibility and biking
I think that if we had cycle racks on buses it would hugely benefit the flexibility of the bus service and be great for people that live in out of the way places or need to get home at unusual times. It would generally provide many more options and encourage cycling.

Improve complaints process and turnaound times
After submitting a complaint on the Maxx website, there is no acknowledgement and it can take up to a week to get a response. You should also be told that your case has been closed or when the next follow up will be. This needs to improve - why can't they use something like zendesk.com?

A Western bus way on SH16 (like the northern bus way) w dedicated bus lane and park & ride
A dedicated bus way on the north western would make taking the bus a faster and practical option for the people that use this motorway. It is constantly congested at peak times, and the bus option could be much faster and more appealing with a dedicated bus lane, park in rides and comfortable stations (a la the north shore)

Cycleways alongside the rail system, provides a safer zone for uninterupted cycling etc.
Utilising the easy gradient slope of the rail system, especially in areas where roads provide no room for safe cycleways.
